U.S. President Donald Trump has extended for another year the ban on vessels sailing under the Russian flag or linked to Russia from entering American ports. The order was published on April 16 in the U.S. Federal Register, according to a report by the national portal “Adyrna” citing DW.

This restriction was first introduced in April 2022 on the initiative of former U.S. President Joe Biden. At the time, Biden stated that the decision aimed to “deprive Russia of the benefits of the international economic system.”

The new order signed by Donald Trump states that the policies and actions of the Russian government pose a threat to the national security of the United States.

The sanctions have dealt a significant blow to the Russian economy. According to The Moscow Times on March 5, U.S. sanctions have resulted in Russia’s federal budget losing about 20% of its oil and gas revenues.

Data from the Russian Ministry of Finance shows that in February 2025, tax revenues from the oil and gas sector amounted to 771.3 billion rubles, which is an 18% decrease compared to the previous year. Experts note that due to increasing international pressure, Russian oil companies are forced to offer large discounts on their products, which in turn reduces budget income.
