The American aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman collided with the merchant ship Besiktas-M in the Mediterranean Sea, according to an official statement from the U.S. Sixth Fleet, as reported by the national portal Adyrna.
The incident occurred during operations in the Mediterranean Sea, near the city of Port Said, in northeastern Egypt.
“The collision did not pose a threat to the Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). There were no reports of sinking or injuries. The propulsion systems were not damaged and remain in a safe and stable condition. The incident is under investigation,” the statement said.
The USS Harry S. Truman, launched in 1998, is part of the U.S. Navy’s carrier strike group. Nimitz-class aircraft carriers are nuclear-powered, with a maximum displacement of up to 106,000 tons, making them the largest warships in the world.
According to VesselFinder, a ship tracking application, the Besiktas-M, which collided with the aircraft carrier, was built in 2003 and currently sails under the Panamanian flag as a bulk carrier.
