Google has changed the name “Gulf of Mexico” to “America Bay” in its Google Maps application, according to the “Adyrna” national portal.
The company stated that this change was made in accordance with an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump.
In an official statement, Google explained that the renaming of the “Gulf of Mexico” in the Google Maps application was the result of an update to the geographical naming system.
“As we announced two weeks ago, we have begun implementing changes related to this update,” the statement said.
It is noted that Google Maps users in the U.S. will now see the name “America Bay”, while in Mexico, the original name “Gulf of Mexico” will remain unchanged. In other countries, both names will be displayed together.
The new name has already been introduced in Google’s cartographic services.
As a reminder, Donald Trump announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico to America Bay during his inauguration on January 20. On the same day, Trump signed an executive order at the White House, officially changing the bay’s name.
He also mentioned that the Gulf of Mexico has been an internationally recognized name for hundreds of years and has played a crucial role in maritime navigation worldwide.
