Archaeologists have made a sensational discovery in the Bayankhongor region of Mongolia, according to the national portal “Adyrna,” citing MiddleAsianNews.
The report states that archaeologists uncovered the mummy of a wealthy individual who lived in the 13th century. This exceptionally well-preserved find provides a deep insight into the past, offering valuable information about the life and culture of Mongolian aristocracy.
The mummy was discovered in a stone-carved burial site, characteristic of funerary practices of that time. Scientists identified the individual as a man aged between 45 and 50, standing approximately 180-188 cm tall.
What amazed researchers was the state of preservation: the skin, hair, nails, and even fingerprints of the mummy remained intact. This level of preservation allows for a thorough study of the mummy, yielding valuable information about his life and diet.
The mummy’s clothing reflects his high social status. He was found dressed in a decorated traditional Mongolian outfit made of leather, along with other garments typical of 13th-14th century nobility.
“This discovery is a true breakthrough in our research. The mummy not only provides extensive knowledge about one individual’s life but also unveils new details about the culture and lifestyle of Mongolian nomads of that era,” said Dr. Bat-Erdene Sukhbaatar, the expedition leader.
Stone burial sites are a valuable source of information about ancient Mongolians. These funerary practices, which date back to ancient times, reflect the cosmological beliefs and attitudes towards death held by Mongolian nomads. The phrase “Khadan gertee kharilaa” (“Returned home – to the stones”) illustrates that, for Mongolians, stones symbolized not only a burial site but also eternity and resurrection.
