The government of Kazakhstan has decided to ban potato exports for six months, reports the national portal “Adyrna,” citing the Prime Minister’s press service.

The ban applies only to the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union. This decision was prompted by a sharp increase in demand for potatoes.

“Due to the growing demand from neighboring countries, especially Uzbekistan, and the high export prices this year, potato exports increased from 411,000 tons to 605,000 tons. This demand has impacted the domestic market. In the past week, prices from producers focused on exports surged from 170 tenge to 270 tenge,” the statement said.

According to the government, the issuance of phytosanitary certificates for export has been completely halted as of January 16.

“The measures taken are aimed at ensuring the stability of potato prices, preventing unjustified price increases, and curbing speculative actions,” the government noted.

The government also stated that the current potato stock is sufficient to fully meet domestic needs until the early harvest of 2025.
