South Korean investigators have arrested President Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of leading a rebellion, according to the “Adyrna” national portal, citing Yonhap news agency.
“The board has arrested President Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of leading a rebellion,” the agency’s report stated.
On the morning of January 15, investigators arrived at the president’s residence to arrest him, but they clashed with the president’s security service. After about 2.5 hours, officials from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) used the stairs to enter the residence, with around 200 police officers and 40 CIO investigators participating in the operation.
It later became known that Yoon Suk-yeol decided to voluntarily go to the investigation to prevent further tragic events. Additionally, the military units guarding the residence agreed not to obstruct the investigators in executing the arrest warrant.
Earlier, on January 3, South Korean investigators had tried to execute the arrest warrant for the temporarily suspended president. However, the operation was halted after more than five hours of clashes with the presidential security, and the Corruption Investigation Office explained the suspension due to the safety risks posed to the personnel present.
Yoon Suk-yeol is accused of staging a military coup, declaring martial law, and deploying troops to obstruct the National Assembly from voting to lift the state of emergency.
