Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested restoring the 17th-century historical name of the United States in response to Donald Trump’s statement about renaming the Gulf of Mexico, reports the national portal “Adyrna,” citing NBC News.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump had floated the idea on Tuesday of renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
In response, Claudia Sheinbaum referred to a European map created in Amsterdam in 1607, which labeled the U.S. territory as “America Mexicana.” According to the president, this name reflects the region’s historical heritage and holds symbolic significance.
“Why not call it ‘America Mexicana’? It aligns with historical accuracy and sounds great,” said Sheinbaum.
The president also refuted Donald Trump’s statement that Mexico is controlled by drug cartels.
“Mexico is governed by its people,” she said.
It should be noted that the name “America Mexicana” was also used in the Apatzingan Constitution of 1814, a document symbolizing the Mexican fight for independence against Spanish rule.
