The criminal case against Askar Akayev was stopped

In Kyrgyzstan, the criminal case against ex-president Askar Akayev was stopped. The head of the press service of the Kyrgyz Prosecutor General's Office, Sirojiddin Kamolidinov, said about this, "Adyrna" correspondent reported.

"The case was closed due to the expiration of the term of criminal prosecution," he said.

Akayev was the president of Kyrgyzstan in 1991-2005. On March 24, 2005, during the "lilac revolution", he fled to Moscow. Later he resigned.

The former head of the country was accused of abuse of power and office in the case related to the development of the Kumtor mine, as well as negligence in the episodes of signing an agreement with the Cameco company in 1992 and restructuring the Kumtor project in 2003.
