A number of Kazakhstanis are trying to change the name of Almaty to "Alma-Ata", the portal "Adyrna" reports citing newtimes.
- We want a city of two million people to have a name that is pleasant and understandable to everyone. In this regard, we believe that the name Alma-Ata is the best option. Also, the suffix "ty" is not in the Kazakh language. Scientists also admit that it came to us from the Dzungars. And the word "Alma-Ata" is also convenient to translate into Russian. Therefore, we call on the new mayor to change the name of the city, the petition reads. Currently, the number of petitioners has exceeded 100 people.
