The Kazakhstan men’s fencing team won a historic bronze medal at the World Championship after defeating a nine-time Olympic champion in the team event.

Today, the national team achieved a major milestone at the World Fencing Championship held in Tbilisi. For the first time in history, our team advanced to the semifinals and defeated the reigning world champions — the Italian national team.

Kirill Prokhorov, Ruslan Kurbanov, Vadim Sharlaimov, and Elmir Alimzhanov competed for a spot in the final against the Tokyo Olympic champions and silver medalists of the upcoming Paris Olympics — the Japanese team — but narrowly lost the match.

In the intense bronze medal bout, the Kazakh team faced the French national team, a nine-time Olympic champion, and secured the bronze medal at the World Championship.

As part of the President’s directive to involve foreign specialists in domestic sports, starting this year, the men’s and women’s national fencing teams have begun working with renowned international coaches and advisors. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports continues systematic efforts to implement state policies aimed at integrating global experience into national sports, enhancing athlete qualifications, improving medal counts, and advancing the development of sports in the country.
